The Exponential Impact of
Community Faculty
by Paul Harasim
They are physicians who volunteer their time to not only
teach at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine, but also
engage in research, student mentorship and community
and committee support – they are the 411 members of
the community faculty who supplement the school’s 150
full-time faculty.
Mark Guadagnoli, PhD, who in his position as associate
dean for faculty affairs and director of learning performance oversees the community faculty, says the diversity
of experiences that the community faculty brings cannot
be overstated. “Without such volunteerism…at medical
schools, educational opportunities would be severely
limited. Having so many full-time medical professionals
on your staff just wouldn’t be 昀椀nancially possible. It would
bankrupt a school.”
When Mark Doubrava, MD, an ophthalmologist with a
private practice in Las Vegas, visits the medical school, he
comes both as a member of the Nevada System of Higher
Education Board of Regents and as a member of the
school’s community faculty: “I’m so proud to be part of
the school, helping teach the next generation of medical
professionals. Working with them is great. Their enthusiasm to learn and ask questions is contagious.”
That kind of positive volunteer experience is found
throughout the community faculty ranks.
Daniel Kokmeyer, MD, and Colby Young, MD, both in
private practice with Hand Surgery Specialists of Nevada,
say they 昀椀nd their work with students and residents gratifying.
“By teaching our residents about hand surgery, orthopaedics and overall patient care,” Dr. Kokmeyer says, “I have
the opportunity to actually impact more lives than working
on my own.”
Says Dr. Young: “Completing the circle of education
requires excellence in your own training, excellence in
care, and subsequently excellence in teaching the future
generation of physicians.”
